Severed Hand

So I'm going to be doing a small tutorial on how I created the severed hand prop on 26.08.15. I used very basic yet versatile special effects materials to create this. So, lets go.

You will need:

- Talc Powder (flour is a good substitute for this)

- Fake Blood

- Liquid Latex

- A variety of different colours, and foundation

- A plastic tub

- Sponge(s) and cotton pads (A LOT of them)

- A variety of brushes to apply colours, as well as a powder brush to apply talc powder (or flour)..

1. Bend your hand into the shape you wish your

severed hand to be in (if you're feeling angry, feel free

to make a severed hand with it's middle finger up, I

won't stop you) and begin to apply latex to your hand.

Whilst doing this, make sure no part of your hand is

touching any other, latex has the overwhelming

tendency to stick to itself (unless your fingers are meant to be connected in your original design of course, but mine weren't, so I kept mine from touching each other). Repeat the layering process for around ten layers and make sure the other layer of latex has dried before applying the next.

FEEL FREE TO USE A HAIR DRYER BETWEEN EACH LAYER OF LATEX, you'll find this extremely handy and time saving, trust me.

2. After around 10 complete layers of latex over your

hand, generously powder your hand completely to

prevent the latex sticking to itself at this stage. This will

also help when it comes to the next step as due to the

powder, you can see how far the latex comes down to

start peeling it upwards.

3. As briefly explained in the last step, find the very

end point that you applied the latex, and begin to

peel the latex upwards from that point, generously

powdering the underneath of the latex as you peel

up, again to prevent it from sticking to itself.

4. Once all of the latex has peeled off, you are left

with a very flimsy, thin rubber cast of your hand.

If the cast at the moment does not look like your

original design, it will after this next step, which is

to completely fill the cast with cotton to give it a lot

more support and a firmer feel to it overall.

5. Once your hand cast is completely full with cotton,

all that is required now is to colour it! And, blood is a

MUST in this prop! Adjust the way you colour it

based upon what you want it to be. Perhaps a

zombie hand?

The finished product...
Bubbling Acid Burn

This was genuinely created very near to the time where I was just starting off in this field of work. When I first posted this video (below) up on Instagram a little while ago, it spawned comments from those who knew me, and those who didn't, all really reading the same exact thing:

"How the hell did you do that?!"

So I thought, after a very long time, I would tell you exactly how I did it.

You will need:

- Liquid Latex

- A sharp tool (tweezers ect)

- A variety of colour

- A plastic tub

- Sponges or Q Tips (whichever you like to apply your latex with)

- Fake blood of your choice

- A dissolvable paracetamol or tablet

1. Locate the area where you wish your burn to be.

I chose my forearm as I definitely feel that area

has the easiest surface to work on, but feel free to

choose wherever you like.

When you have chosen, begin to apply thin layers

of liquid latex to the area. You should repeat this for around five layers to really

ensure you have a thick enough base for the next step.

DISCLAIMER - please wait for the previous layer to dry BEFORE applying your next. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the layering process if you so wish.

2. Once you have your layers completed and they are

dry enough, its time to channel your inner trypophobic

self, by tearing and rubbing holes within the latex to

create the places where the acid has burnt through the skin

to the flesh.

3. As soon as you feel your chosen area is efficiently 'holey'

its time to colour it. Use whichever colour scheme you would

like. I used a pink base with black around the holes and red

all over. The fake blood made up most of the colour scheme

of my burn, so it's really hard to tell what I actually did. You

can also add a little fake blood in this step, if you want your burn to be fresh and bloody.

4. Now for the fun part. Find your dissolvable tablet, zip lock

bag, and something to bash the hell out of it with. place your

tablet inside the bag and begin to crush it up. You kinda want

some pieces bigger than others, and for it not to be a completely

powdery consistency, but you want a little powder in there.

5. Take some of your tablet chunks and stick them in and under

some of the holes you created in the latex, so the chunks aren't

entirely visible, but they are still easily accessible. If you have

some powdered tablet in the bag too, sprinkle as much as

you wish over top the entire burn.

6. Dependant on what you have, take water in a spray bottle

or an extremely watery red tinted blood to spray the tablet

chunk (and powder) wherever they/it may be. You will notice shortly

that they begin to bubble!
